Men are born with a horsepower gene. Women are born with a shoe gene.
This is from an ad that was in a magazine that came to our house yesterday. Right away, it made me mad. Is it wrong that it made me mad? Of course, it doesn't help that the ad began this way, "Girls Play With Dolls. Boys Play With Trucks. Let's Start There."
I don't like to be put in a box. I suppose, in a way, this relates back to my last journal entry. Stereotyping stinks. So what if I like (okay, read that *LOVE*) shoes? I just don't want to be told that, because I'm a girl, I like shoes. I simply like shoes because I like shoes. Period.
Yeah, yeah. I'm in marketing - I get it. They're playing to their target market, who happen to be men looking for a truck. Still, it bugs me. Who cares if they piss off a bunch of girls? They weren't going to sell many trucks to those girls anyway, right? Grrrrr....
So, I just asked one of my colleagues, who is a guy, what he thought of the ad. The first words out of his mouth? "That is wrong, just wrong."
One down. Many to go.
And, by the way, I'm a horsepower freak too. Does that make me a man? No. It makes me a girl who digs fast, powerful cars.
edit. Make that fast, powerful trucks too.
